Understanding compensation …
Before I worked in human resources, compensation planning was a bit of a mystery. I’d been in management for years but I wanted to know things like …
- How those HR types knew what to pay employees
- Why they set up job grades
- How they determined what range of pay was best for each job grade
- How they set merit increase pools
Due to a corporate restructure, I was offered an opportunity to move from Admin to HR and all the answers to all my questions about comp planning were answered—in about six years. Yep, it took a while but I got a lot of answers, and ended up with a lot more questions.
I no longer work for that company or directly in HR. I work for Business and Legal Resources. BLR provides compliance guidance, tools, and time savers for HR professionals. As an editor of Compensation.BLR.com I talk with a lot of HR folks looking for solutions to their comp-related challenges. I hope to address some of those challenges in this blog and, with a little luck, learn some things from you as well.
I promise I won’t plug my day job too often but, let’s be real, you know I will every now and then.
